Tanzania Visa for Dutch Citizens: Online Application Guide

The correct category for a Dutch leisure traveller is usually the Ordinary Visa. That route fits a wildlife safari, beach stay, family or friend visit and other permitted short purposes that do not involve Tanzanian employment. Eligibility follows the passport being used, not residence in the Netherlands, possession of an EU identity card or the airport from which the traveller departs.

Tanzania Immigration lists the Netherlands among nationalities that can obtain a visa online or on arrival and recommends the online platform. Applying before departure moves the form, upload and payment work away from the immigration hall. It also gives the traveller time to replace an unreadable passport image or correct a route that accidentally shows two first hotels.

Official guidance describes the Ordinary Visa as valid for up to 90 days, but the grant notice and border decision determine the actual permission. Tourism does not authorise paid work, local employment or an extended course. Applicants should choose another immigration route when the real activity falls outside a visitor holiday.

The Netherlands was one of Tanzania's ten largest overall source markets in the 2025 official visitor survey and also ranked strongly for Zanzibar. A common itinerary connects Amsterdam with Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar through a European, Gulf or African hub, then combines wildlife and beach days. The visa covers both halves of that journey.

The first-destination field must follow the ticket. A passenger arriving at Kilimanjaro before flying to Zanzibar chooses the mainland; a traveller landing directly in Zanzibar chooses Zanzibar. The first lodge, hotel or tour operator should support that sequence. Do not copy the destination displayed most prominently in an agency brochure when it is not the first international arrival.

Leaving Tanzania for Kenya or Rwanda and returning is different from a domestic island transfer. Check the issued visa for re-entry permission and review the other country separately. Tanzania is not included in the East African Tourist Visa used by certain neighbouring states, even when one Dutch tour operator sells the regional journey as one package.

Dutch airline and banking systems sometimes display tussenvoegsels differently, creating doubt about where a prefix belongs. The Tanzania application should follow the passport, not an airline loyalty profile or everyday mailing convention. Enter every given name printed in the passport rather than using only the roepnaam. The machine-readable zone is the final international comparison.

Use the active passport number, not the number on a Dutch identity card. The passport presented to the airline and border officer must be the document connected to the visa record. If renewal is planned, waiting for the new passport can prevent an approval being tied to a document that will no longer travel.

The uploaded page should be complete, square and readable. Reflections can hide the document number or expiry date, while automatic phone compression can damage the machine-readable lines. Upload a separate recent portrait rather than cropping the small image printed inside the passport.

Many Dutch travellers assemble Tanzania trips independently, booking flights, safari operators and Zanzibar accommodation through different platforms. The application can still be clear. Identify the first reachable accommodation and keep a short itinerary that shows the main movements and final departure. A local operator contact is useful when the first nights are inside a safari circuit.

Free-cancellation reservations are not automatically invalid, but dates and names must be credible. Avoid creating a placeholder hotel in Dar es Salaam when the ticket lands in Zanzibar or using an expired quotation that no longer matches the booked route. If the property changes after submission, keep the revised confirmation for border inspection.

For a private stay, provide the host's real name, location and contact details. A routine hotel-based tourist should not manufacture an invitation letter. Documents are strongest when they explain the real trip with the minimum necessary complexity.

Dutch visitors sometimes combine a holiday with a conservation project, school placement or community activity. Calling every unpaid activity "tourism" is unsafe because Tanzania offers specific Student and other permissions for volunteering, research and internships. Before paying, ask what the host organisation expects the visitor to do and which official category covers it.

A self-guided cycling trip or recreational climb remains a personal tourism activity when no work is performed. The itinerary can include the route, first accommodation and operator or emergency contact. Park fees, guide rules, bicycle import questions and insurance are separate from the visa and should not be assumed complete because an eVisa was granted.

When purpose is unclear, pause the application rather than selecting tourism to continue quickly. A correct category is more important than a fast checkout. Tanzania Immigration can request evidence and border officers assess the real activity on arrival.

The ten-day reference is not a guaranteed processing promise. A file may need additional review or replacement evidence, and the customer's flight date does not force a government outcome. Submit when the passport and principal bookings are stable, leaving enough time for one correction cycle.

Save the application identification number and monitor the official tracking function. Email can be filtered, so do not wait only for a message. When a new file is requested, answer the specific issue: replace glare with a new scan, clarify conflicting dates with a revised booking, and never upload the same failed image unchanged.

Read the grant notice as soon as it arrives. Compare the name and passport number with the physical document, retain an offline copy and request guidance about any material mismatch before departure.

Store essential evidence offline. Airport Wi-Fi and roaming may not work immediately, so a PDF folder or printed set containing the visa, ticket, first address and operator contact is useful. Keep route-sensitive yellow-fever evidence with the passport where current health rules make it relevant.

If a booking changes after approval, carry the replacement and explain the new plan honestly. A real change supported by evidence is easier to assess than an answer invented at the desk.
