Do India Citizens Need a Visa for Tanzania?
Commonwealth membership does not make Indian passport holders visa-free. Tourism normally uses Ordinary Visa; employment and specialised activities require another route.
Yes. Indian citizens need a Tanzania visa because India is expressly excluded from the broad Commonwealth exemption. Indian tourists normally use the Ordinary Visa. India is eligible for online and on-arrival facilities, and online application is recommended. The evis.tz assisted total is $99.
The government fee and our assistance fee are shown separately. Our service is designed to reduce avoidable category, document and data-entry errors before submission.

Use the nationality shown in the passport and select tourism only when the trip is genuinely a holiday, safari, beach stay or private visit without employment.
Scan the full biodata page, create a separate portrait file and keep the itinerary, first accommodation and return journey together.
Names, passport number, dates, arrival point and contact information should describe the same trip across every field and attachment.
Correct transcription errors before submission. Tanzania Immigration warns that a submitted application cannot simply be edited afterwards.
Keep the application identification number and monitor both the tracking page and email inbox until the grant notice is available.
Carry the passport used in the application, visa grant notice, return ticket and the accommodation or tour details used to explain the visit.
State the sponsor's full name, relationship and which trip costs they cover.
Use a sponsor letter and relationship evidence when the connection is not obvious.
Prepare readable financial evidence if requested and explain unusual ownership or deposits.
Sponsor, hotel, ticket and application dates should describe one consistent visit.
Yes. India is specifically named as an exception to Tanzania's broad Commonwealth visa exemption. Indian passport holders normally use the Ordinary Visa for a tourism trip.
Commonwealth membership is the main source of confusion for Indian travellers. Tanzania's guidelines exempt many Commonwealth nationals but explicitly exclude India. An Indian citizen should therefore plan for a visa rather than relying on a general statement about Commonwealth entry.
For a safari, Zanzibar beach stay, Kilimanjaro visit or private holiday, the Ordinary Visa is normally the correct category. India is also listed for online and on-arrival facilities, with online application recommended. Tourism does not authorise Tanzanian employment, commercial work or a long course.
Official guidance describes Ordinary Visa validity as up to 90 days, subject to the issued conditions. A grant notice permits travel for border clearance and does not guarantee admission or automatically grant the maximum stay.
Copy the identity exactly from the passport. Applicants with multiple given names, initials or an unusual blank surname/given-name arrangement should not invent a new split merely to satisfy another booking system.
Indian passports can contain initials, several given names, a single name or identity fields that airlines display differently. Use the surname and given-name fields shown on the passport biodata page and check the machine-readable zone. A PAN, Aadhaar or other domestic identity record does not replace the passport identity for this visa.
If the passport has no surname or presents a single name, review the application field instructions carefully and seek guidance rather than duplicating or rearranging the name without basis. The flight booking should be made in a format consistent with the travel document and carrier rules.
Use the current passport number and upload the complete page in colour. Avoid WhatsApp-compressed images, fingers, glare and cropped machine lines. The separate portrait should be recent and should not be taken from the passport image.
No. Every passport holder, including children, submits a separate application. Flights and accommodation can be shared, but passports, portraits, application IDs and decisions remain individual.
Family trips often use one booking reference and one payer. Before applying, create a folder for each person and label the passport and portrait files clearly. This prevents a parent's passport being attached to a child's record during several similar submissions.
If one booking shows only the lead traveller, obtain a passenger list or supporting confirmation that connects the remaining applicants. Every child needs an individual record under Tanzania guidance, even when travelling on the same itinerary.
Track every application separately. A correction requested for one family member does not necessarily affect the others, and one approval never covers the group.
Yes. One valid Tanzania visa covers Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Select the genuine first arrival point and keep the hotel, safari and flight sequence consistent.
An Indian itinerary may connect through the Gulf or Ethiopia and land at Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar. The application's first destination should match where Tanzanian immigration is first cleared. A later domestic flight between the mainland and Zanzibar does not require another visa.
Use the first hotel, lodge or local operator to explain the opening days. If a package includes several parks, a concise chronological itinerary is better than unrelated screenshots. Check that dates do not overlap or place the traveller in distant regions at once.
A side trip to Kenya or another state requires separate permission and a review of Tanzania re-entry. Tanzania is not part of the East African Tourist Visa issued by some neighbours.
| Trip | First destination | Visa position |
|---|---|---|
| India → Zanzibar → safari | Zanzibar | One Tanzania visa |
| India → Kilimanjaro → Zanzibar | Mainland | One Tanzania visa |
| Tanzania → Kenya → return | First Tanzania arrival | Check re-entry |
A normal hotel-based tourist can use genuine accommodation details. A private visitor supplies the real host. Commercial work or business activity must be assessed under the correct purpose rather than hidden inside tourism.
Indian travellers may visit relatives, attend events or combine leisure with meetings. A simple family or social visit can fall within permitted ordinary-visa purposes, but paid work, assignments and business activity may require another category and supporting letter. Describe what will actually happen.
Do not manufacture an invitation for a hotel holiday. Use the property or tour operator. For a genuine private host, make sure the name, address and relationship are accurate. If sponsorship pays for the trip, connect the sponsor to the applicant and explain what costs are covered.
A category selected only to reduce price or paperwork can create refusal or border difficulty. Resolve purpose before payment.
Tanzania advises submission at least ten days before travel. Families, wedding travel, school holidays and regional itineraries should leave several weeks for correction.
Ten days is not a promised processing deadline. A document-quality problem, name-field question or request for further information can extend review. Apply after the passport and main bookings are final but well before the flight.
Save each application ID and track it online. Do not depend only on email. Replace a failed file with a genuinely clearer original and keep all payment and status records together.
Compare approval with the physical passport and keep an offline copy. A renewed passport or material error requires official guidance before departure.
The $99 displayed by evis.tz is our total assisted Ordinary Visa price.
evis.tz is independent from Tanzania Immigration and the Indian government. Assistance supports the form and documents but cannot guarantee approval, processing speed or admission. Applicants may use the official portal directly if they do not want assistance.
Before payment, confirm India as passport nationality, the true purpose, first destination and full total. International online payments may need card enablement; a failed transaction is not a visa refusal and should not automatically trigger duplicate applications.
Keep the receipt and application ID and verify unexpected payment messages. A clear service explains both its price and its limits.
Carry the passport used to apply, visa grant notice, return ticket, first accommodation or host information and evidence of funds if requested.
The officer can ask about the purpose, route and departure. Answers should match the application. Keep a concise itinerary and local contact available in English where useful.
Store documents offline and carry relevant yellow-fever evidence when the route requires it. A Tanzania visa does not replace transit permission for a connection country.
Approval permits travel for clearance; admission remains a government decision.
Check the passport identity first, the financial or sponsor story second and the travel chronology third. Do not let a domestic identity document or family booking override the passport record.
Identity review begins with the active passport. Confirm the surname and given-name field placement, all initials or expanded names, number and expiry. Aadhaar, PAN and domestic bank records may support other matters but cannot redefine the international passport identity. A single-name or blank-surname case deserves guidance before submission, because inventing a split can create a visa that does not match the travel document.
When another person pays, the application should still identify the traveller correctly. Keep a short sponsor explanation, relationship evidence where relevant and financial documents that show who covers the trip. A large unexplained transfer made only for the application can create more questions than a simple, honest sponsorship trail. Hotel and flight records should identify the applicant or family group.
Review the journey from the first Tanzanian airport to departure. The first accommodation or host should agree with that arrival, safari and Zanzibar dates should not overlap incorrectly, and any Kenyan side trip needs separate immigration planning. Check every family member's upload before paying and record each application ID separately. Payment is the final step of a correct file, not a substitute for resolving identity or purpose questions.
A Tanzania visa does not grant transit-country entry and does not waive yellow-fever rules. Review the actual connection, baggage transfer and recent travel history separately.
Indian itineraries commonly connect through Gulf or East African hubs. A same-ticket airside connection can operate differently from separate tickets that require baggage collection. Check the airline and transit government before departure; Tanzania permission cannot solve a transit visa requirement.
Yellow-fever evidence depends on the route and recent presence in risk countries, not Indian citizenship alone. Carry the original certificate when current rules make it relevant and recheck after a flight change. Keep the return ticket, transit itinerary and health evidence offline with the grant notice.
These parallel checks explain why visa approval is not the final travel task. The passenger remains responsible for airline, health and border requirements throughout the route.
Keep the receipt, application ID, submitted passport copy, grant notice, return ticket and first stay together.
Store these files offline and label them with the traveller's passport name. Families should maintain one record set per person. At entry, use the physical passport connected to the approval and present revised bookings honestly when the itinerary changed. Retaining the submitted evidence also makes it easier to explain a correction request or verify that a message genuinely belongs to the application.
