Zanzibar Visa Requirements: Tanzania eVisa Guide for 2026
Tanzania Visa Guide Article Details
Zanzibar creates one of the most valuable pre-application questions: “Do I need a Tanzania visa, a Zanzibar visa, or both?” The official Tanzania eVisa portal answers the central issue clearly. The online visa is for visiting the United Republic of Tanzania, including Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. A traveller combining Serengeti, Ngorongoro and a Zanzibar beach stay does not apply for a fresh visa when moving between the mainland and the islands.
The application still needs the correct first destination, travel dates and visa category. A direct flight to Zanzibar and a safari beginning at Kilimanjaro International Airport should not be described the same way. This guide turns the Zanzibar question into an application-ready plan covering category, documents, first entry, health routing and price.
Flying to Zanzibar or combining it with safari?
Use the guided form to select your actual first destination and prepare one coherent Tanzania visa application.
Start Tanzania and Zanzibar applicationIs Zanzibar covered by the Tanzania eVisa?
Yes. Tanzania Immigration’s official portal says travellers can apply online to visit both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Its guidelines add that an applicant planning to visit both should choose the first destination in the form and will then be allowed to visit both without needing a new visa. The visa category is based on nationality and purpose, not on whether the hotel is on the mainland or in Zanzibar.
This means a typical safari-and-beach holiday uses one Tanzania visa application per traveller. It does not mean every traveller requires a visa: some nationalities may be exempt, while referral-category nationals face prior-approval rules. Check nationality before paying or relying on visa on arrival.
Which first destination should you select?
Select the place where you first enter the United Republic of Tanzania. If the international flight lands directly at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar, Zanzibar is the first destination. If the trip lands in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or another mainland entry point before continuing to the islands, Mainland Tanzania is first.
Do not choose the destination with the longest stay or the most expensive hotel. The field describes chronology. A traveller can spend one night in Arusha, six nights on safari and ten nights in Zanzibar; the first destination remains the mainland. A traveller spending ten days in Zanzibar and then flying to Arusha begins in Zanzibar.
| Itinerary | First destination | Application note |
|---|---|---|
| London → Zanzibar → home | Zanzibar | Island-only Tanzania trip |
| Amsterdam → Kilimanjaro → safari → Zanzibar | Mainland Tanzania | One visa covers both stages |
| Dubai → Dar es Salaam → Zanzibar | Mainland Tanzania | First immigration arrival is mainland |
| Nairobi → Zanzibar → Arusha → home | Zanzibar | Review yellow-fever routing from Kenya |
Do you need a visa for Zanzibar tourism?
If your nationality requires a Tanzania visa, ordinary holiday travel normally uses Ordinary Visa. Tanzania’s published government fee is USD 50 and validity can be up to 90 days, subject to the issued visa. United States passport holders are the notable tourism exception: official guidance directs them to Multiple Entry Visa, with a government fee of USD 100, even when they expect only one visit.
European Union membership, a Schengen residence permit, a UK residence card, a US visa or a hotel package does not independently create Tanzania visa exemption. The controlling identity is the passport used for travel. A dual national should apply under the passport that will be presented to the airline and immigration officer.
Zanzibar visa prices with and without assistance
There is no separate “Zanzibar tourist visa fee” in the standard combined journey. The applicable Tanzania visa fee follows the category. The evis.tz assisted Ordinary Visa total is $99, consisting of the $50 government fee and a $49 assistance fee. For US tourists using Multiple Entry Visa, the assisted total is $189, consisting of the $100 government fee and an $89 assistance fee.
Travellers can apply directly through the Tanzania government portal and pay the official fee without the evis.tz service charge. The assisted route adds a guided interface, document prompts, consistency review and support. Neither route guarantees approval or entry.
What documents should a Zanzibar tourist prepare?
Prepare the passport biodata page, a separate recent passport photograph, a return or onward ticket, first accommodation and a simple itinerary. The passport should normally be valid for at least six months from arrival and have at least one unused visa page. Every child and adult needs a separate application.
- Passport: full colour biodata page without glare or cropping.
- Portrait: recent front-facing JPG/JPEG on a plain background.
- Ticket: passenger name, arrival route and departure date.
- First stay: genuine resort, hotel, host or tour operator.
- Combined itinerary: clear transfer between Zanzibar and the mainland.
An island package may list only the lead traveller. Ask the operator for a passenger or guest list before preparing separate family applications. Do not edit a voucher to insert names. Each person’s passport identity should connect to genuine transport and accommodation evidence.
How should a safari and Zanzibar itinerary be written?
Use a short chronology rather than a day-by-day marketing brochure. Identify the international arrival, first hotel or operator, principal safari stage, transfer to Zanzibar, island accommodation and international departure. The dates should not overlap or leave impossible transfers.
For example: arrive at Kilimanjaro on 4 September, stay in Arusha, safari from 5–10 September, fly to Zanzibar on 11 September, stay in Nungwi through 16 September and depart Zanzibar on 17 September. This is easier to check than three separate quotations with different dates.
What if you fly into Zanzibar and leave from Kilimanjaro?
That is an open-jaw itinerary and can still be coherent. Show the direct Zanzibar arrival, the domestic transfer to the mainland, the safari stage and the final Kilimanjaro departure. The return or onward evidence does not have to leave from the same airport used for entry, but the chronology must make sense.
Is a hotel booking required for every night?
The application should contain accurate accommodation information, but the user does not need to turn the form into a long lodge inventory. Use the first confirmed hotel, resort, host or principal operator as the main anchor and retain the full route as supporting evidence. If the first stay is a safari arrangement without a conventional hotel, use the genuine operator and available first-night details.
Do not create a refundable reservation that you already intend to cancel simply to fill a field. If a real booking changes, keep the current confirmation and remove obsolete versions from the application folder. Referral-category applicants should follow the official instruction not to purchase flights or accommodation until approval.
Yellow fever rules for Zanzibar routes
Yellow fever requirements depend on where the traveller arrives from and where they spent long transit time. Tanzania Ministry of Health guidance states that vaccination is mandatory for travellers arriving from yellow-fever-endemic countries and for travellers whose connection in such a country lasts 12 hours or more. The vaccine should be administered at least ten days before entry.
This is particularly important for East African combinations. A traveller flying from Kenya to Zanzibar may face a different certificate expectation from someone arriving directly from Europe or the Gulf. A European departure does not automatically remove the issue if the itinerary includes a 12-hour-or-longer transit in a listed country.
Medical and age exemptions have specific conditions. A visa approval is not a health certificate, and health screening is not replaced by uploading a passport. Check the current Ministry of Health notice and airline advice shortly before departure.
Do mainland-to-Zanzibar travellers pass immigration again?
Operational document checks can occur during travel, so carry the passport and visa evidence even when moving within Tanzania. The key visa principle remains that no second Tanzania visa is required simply for visiting Zanzibar after the mainland. Keep the current itinerary and accommodation available offline in case an airline, ferry operator or official asks for supporting details.
Local procedures, security checks, arrival cards, insurance products or tourism charges are not the same thing as a second visa. Read each requirement by its actual name and issuing authority. Paying a local charge does not extend visa validity, and holding a visa does not prove that every local travel form has been completed.
Can you get a visa on arrival in Zanzibar?
Some eligible travellers can use a visa-on-arrival facility, but it should not be treated as universal. Nationality, passport type and referral status matter. An online application can reduce uncertainty and gives the traveller time to address an image, category or document problem before flying.
Referral-category applicants are not advised to rely on arrival processing without prior approval. Official guidance tells them to apply online, allow at least two months and avoid purchasing flights or accommodation before approval. Travellers with refugee or stateless documents also require route-specific care.
Zanzibar honeymoon application checklist
Honeymoon bookings often create a surname mismatch. The traveller may use a new married name with the resort while the current passport remains in the previous name. The visa must follow the passport being carried. Correct the airline and hotel profile where necessary rather than changing the visa identity to match an informal booking.
- Confirm each spouse’s current passport name and number.
- Make sure both travellers appear on the ticket and resort confirmation.
- Use separate applications and separate portraits.
- Select the true first destination.
- Leave time for correction before non-refundable deadlines.
- Keep each approval with the correct passport copy.
Zanzibar family application checklist
Every passport holder, including an infant or child, needs an individual visa application. Shared hotel and flight evidence can support the family, but identity files are not interchangeable. Label documents with the passport name and maintain one application ID per person.
If one parent travels alone with a child, review airline, transit and consent-document rules separately. These are not automatically Tanzania visa uploads, but they can affect boarding or border questions. The family should carry relevant relationship evidence when appropriate.
Zanzibar plus Kenya: can the same visa be used?
A Tanzania visa does not authorize entry into Kenya. Each country applies its own immigration rules. Tanzania’s official guidance says an Ordinary Visa holder who visits an East African country after arriving in Tanzania may use the same Tanzania visa when returning, provided that visa is still valid. The issued visa and trip facts should be checked before relying on re-entry.
A Nairobi connection also affects yellow fever analysis. Distinguish an airside connection from an arrival and long stay, and calculate transit duration. Keep Kenya permission, Tanzania visa and health evidence as separate workstreams.
When should you apply for a Zanzibar trip?
Apply after the passport and major itinerary are stable, but not at the airport. A simple island holiday still needs enough time for a clearer passport copy or corrected ticket if requested. Several weeks of margin is sensible for an expensive honeymoon, charter flight or combined safari. Referral cases require much more time.
No assistance service can guarantee a government decision date. An internal review can identify avoidable inconsistencies, while Tanzania Immigration retains complete authority over processing. Keep cancellation deadlines and visa uncertainty in the same planning calendar without assuming one party must absorb the other’s risk.
Common Zanzibar visa mistakes
- Selecting Zanzibar because it is the longest stay, despite entering on the mainland.
- Applying for a second visa for the island stage.
- Using Ordinary Visa for a US tourist.
- Uploading a resort voucher that names only the booking lead.
- Ignoring a long yellow-fever-country transit.
- Using a honeymoon surname not printed in the passport.
- Assuming a child is included on a parent’s application.
- Buying non-refundable travel before a referral-category approval.
How the guided Zanzibar application works
Start with nationality and purpose. The form identifies the likely route, then collects travel, passport and document information in short stages. Upload the passport biodata page, portrait, ticket and relevant travel evidence. Review the summary before payment and retain the application ID.
The Ordinary Visa assisted total is $99 and the US tourism Multiple Entry Visa assisted total is $189. Each total includes the applicable published government fee and a disclosed evis.tz service fee. Read the service terms and refund policy before payment. Travellers who prefer no assistance can apply directly on the official Tanzania eVisa portal.

Final answer: one visa, the correct first destination
A valid Tanzania visa can cover both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Apply once per passport holder, choose the first destination honestly and connect the ticket, first accommodation and combined itinerary. Then review yellow fever requirements against the actual route, especially after travel through Kenya or another listed country.
Should you enter Zanzibar by ferry or domestic flight?
The choice between ferry and domestic flight does not create a new visa category, but it changes the evidence and timing in the itinerary. A traveller who lands in Dar es Salaam and takes a ferry to Zanzibar has already entered through Mainland Tanzania. Keep the international arrival, the ferry reservation and the Zanzibar accommodation in chronological order. Allow realistic transfer time between the airport, terminal and sailing.
A traveller flying from a mainland safari airport to Zanzibar should keep the domestic flight confirmation with the safari chronology. Check passenger spelling and baggage limits because small-aircraft bookings can abbreviate names or use strict weight allowances. Those airline rules are separate from visa approval, yet an incorrect passenger record can still create operational trouble.
Weather, schedule changes and missed connections can alter an island transfer. Retain the latest booking and carry it offline. A legitimate change after visa submission should be explained with the replacement record rather than hidden by editing an older ticket.
Does leaving Tanzania during the holiday change the visa plan?
A route that stays within Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar is not an international departure. By contrast, flying from Zanzibar to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda or another country and later returning to Tanzania creates a re-entry question. Do not assume that every single-entry visa can always be reused merely because the same holiday continues.
Official guidance notes that an Ordinary Visa holder who visits an East African country after arriving in Tanzania may use the same visa on return when it remains valid. The issued conditions, nationality and exact route should still be checked before relying on that provision. Keep proof of the continuing Tanzania stay and permission for the other country.
If frequent international exits are central to the journey, confirm the suitable category before applying. Multiple Entry Visa is not a general convenience upgrade available merely because a traveller prefers flexibility; non-US applicants can need specific authorization and supporting evidence. A travel plan should follow the permitted visa rather than trying to force the visa around an improvised route.
What should you carry on arrival in Zanzibar?
Carry the physical passport used in the application, the visa grant notice, current return or onward ticket, first accommodation and a reachable local contact. Keep digital copies offline because roaming or airport Wi-Fi may be unreliable. When yellow fever evidence applies to the route, carry the valid certificate or accepted exemption evidence.
Compare the visa with the passport before departure. A correct email attachment stored beside the wrong family member’s passport is not useful at check-in. Approval is permission to travel and request entry; it does not prevent immigration or health officers from examining the supporting documents.
