Tanzania’s published online terms advise applying at least ten days before expected travel, while cases requiring advance referral need much longer. Non-refundable travel should not be built around an unapproved application when the official route advises otherwise.

What happens when applying online?

The applicant selects a visa type, enters passport and personal information, provides travel details, uploads the required documents, pays the relevant fee and submits the application. Email and application credentials are used for notifications and status tracking. Every passport holder, including a child, requires an individual application.

For an ordinary tourist route, prepare the passport biodata page, a separate compliant portrait, return or onward ticket and coherent trip details. The passport should normally have at least six months of validity and at least one unused visa page. United States passport holders travelling for tourism are directed to the Multiple Entry Visa route rather than the Ordinary Visa.

Once submitted, important details may not be freely editable. A quiet arrival can be straightforward; several international flights landing together can create a longer process.

Do not assume that airport staff will repair a wrong visa category. Tourism, a short qualifying business assignment and genuine transit are different purposes. Carrying a hotel booking does not turn employment or long-term activity into tourism.

Do eVisa and visa on arrival cost the same?

The Tanzania government visa category determines the government fee. The published schedule lists $50 for an Ordinary Visa, $100 for a Multiple Entry Visa, $250 for a Business Visa and $30 for a Transit Visa. United States passport holders travelling for tourism normally need the $100 Multiple Entry Visa category.

A pre-approved online visa can reduce the number of visa-application tasks left until arrival, but every traveller still completes immigration and entry checks. An arrival visa can be quick when the facility is quiet and the documents are ready, or slower when multiple flights arrive together. No honest comparison can promise a fixed airport queue time.

Think in terms of where the work happens. Online applicants spend time preparing and waiting before departure. Arrival applicants move more of that work to the destination airport. Families, groups and travellers with tight transfers often prefer to reduce destination tasks. Flexible solo travellers with clear arrival eligibility may value the arrival option differently.

Can an airline refuse boarding without an eVisa?

Airlines verify destination documentation during check-in. A traveller clearly eligible for visa on arrival may be accepted without a pre-issued eVisa, but the carrier can request evidence of eligibility, onward travel and other destination conditions. Staff use current travel-document systems and carrier procedures, not a screenshot of an informal travel forum.

Carry the passport used for the eligibility check, a return or onward ticket, first accommodation and evidence supporting the travel purpose. When the route includes transit through another country, check its transit rules separately. Tanzania arrival eligibility does not grant permission to pass through a third country.

If the nationality or travel document has an advance-approval requirement, arriving at check-in without the necessary approval can prevent boarding. Confirm uncertain cases before travel rather than expecting the airline to resolve them at the gate.

Does the same visa cover Zanzibar?

A valid Tanzania visa can cover travel to both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. When applying online for a trip visiting both, select the first Tanzanian destination. A traveller flying directly to Zanzibar should identify Zanzibar first; someone landing in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro before visiting the islands should identify that mainland arrival.

A fixed safari or Zanzibar package normally involves valuable reservations, internal flights and scheduled transfers. Applying online with a sensible buffer lets the traveller align the intended arrival, first hotel or operator, safari dates and island segment before departure.

Arrival visa may still be lawful for an eligible passport, but the financial consequence of delay can be higher when a driver, charter flight or lodge check-in is waiting. Carry the principal operator’s details and a chronological itinerary regardless of the visa route.
