Tanzania Visa for German Citizens: Safari Application Guide

A German citizen is not visa-exempt for a normal Tanzania tourism trip. The Ordinary Visa is the standard route when the purpose is leisure, wildlife viewing, beach travel, trekking or visiting friends and relatives without employment. The selected category must match the real activity rather than the easiest description in a tour brochure.

Germany appears on Tanzania's list for both online and on-arrival visas. The official guidance recommends applying online. For a carefully planned safari, completing the visa before departure keeps immigration paperwork separate from the arrival transfer and makes it possible to correct a document while the traveller is still at home.

The Ordinary Visa may be valid for up to 90 days according to the official guide, but the actual grant notice and border permission determine the stay. It does not authorise paid work, permanent residence or a long study programme. Mountain guiding, volunteering and professional assignments should be checked against the appropriate category rather than automatically labelled tourism.

German safari itineraries are often detailed and may include Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti in one week. The visa application does not need a narrative of every game drive, but it does need a believable route. Dates should move forward logically and the first accommodation should be reachable from the stated airport.

A tour operator confirmation is valuable when it identifies the traveller and local contact. If a German agency voucher shows only the wholesaler, add the Tanzanian ground operator or first lodge where available. Do not invent telephone numbers or addresses. When camps change, a single organised itinerary is clearer than unrelated screenshots.

Check overnight dates carefully. A common inconsistency is a Zanzibar hotel beginning before the Serengeti portion ends, or a return flight leaving a day before the last lodge checkout. Review the application alongside the final Reiseplan, not an early quotation. Upload only the version that reflects the booked journey.

German international documents provide a machine-readable spelling for characters that electronic forms may not support. An umlaut may be represented with an added E and ß as SS in the MRZ. Use the passport's international representation rather than improvising a different spelling. Keep all given names shown in the passport even if daily bookings use only the Rufname.

Do not enter the Personalausweis number in the passport field. Copy the number, issue date and expiry date from the Reisepass that will be presented to the airline and Tanzanian officer. A dual citizen should choose one document path and use it consistently. If renewal is planned, applying after the new passport arrives avoids tying the record to a document that will not travel.

Scan the complete biodata page in colour. German passport security surfaces can reflect overhead light, so check that the number, portrait, dates and MRZ remain clear. The portrait upload is a separate recent image and should not be extracted from the passport or taken from a casual holiday photograph.

A German applicant climbing Kilimanjaro should describe the purpose as tourism when the trip is a personal trek organised through an appropriate operator. The operator or first Moshi/Arusha accommodation can anchor the itinerary. The visa is not a climbing permit and does not prove that park fees, guides or rescue arrangements are complete.

Insurance terms deserve separate review. High-altitude trekking, evacuation and pre-existing conditions may have specific exclusions. Immigration does not validate insurance coverage as part of granting a standard tourist visa, so an approval email should never be treated as evidence that the expedition is adequately protected.

Health advice and yellow-fever documentation also remain separate. Requirements can depend on the recent travel route, particularly when the trek is combined with another African country. Carry any relevant certificate and review medical guidance from qualified sources before travel. Changes in the connection can alter the health-document question without changing German visa eligibility.

A Frankfurt–Addis Ababa–Kilimanjaro arrival followed by Zanzibar begins on the mainland. A Frankfurt–Doha–Zanzibar ticket begins in Zanzibar even if the traveller later flies to Arusha. The visa covers both, but the first-destination field should match the ticket and opening accommodation.

Domestic flights between mainland airports and Zanzibar do not require a second Tanzania visa. A side trip to Kenya, Rwanda or another country is an international movement and requires a separate review of re-entry permission. Tanzania is not included in the East African Tourist Visa issued by some neighbours.

Keep internal-flight confirmations because they help explain a route with distant accommodations. If a domestic schedule changes after visa approval, carry the revised itinerary. The critical point is that the visitor's explanation remains truthful and the overall trip stays within the issued purpose and dates.

The official advice is a minimum planning reference, not a guarantee that every decision arrives in ten days. A blurred passport, wrong date or additional-information request can extend the practical process. Submit when the passport and core route are final, not while the traveller is still comparing two different itineraries.

Save the application identification number and track the case through the portal. Email notifications are helpful but can be filtered. If a correction is requested, provide a new file that directly solves the problem and keep the old and new versions clearly labelled.

Once issued, compare the grant notice to the physical passport. Store an offline copy and carry it with the return ticket and first accommodation. If the passport is lost or renewed, ask the competent authority how the change affects the visa rather than presuming that a PDF remains valid with any replacement document.
