Tanzania Visa for French Citizens: Online Application Guide

A French citizen taking a safari, Zanzibar holiday, Kilimanjaro trek or private leisure trip normally fits the Ordinary Visa category. The route is based on the passport and the real purpose of travel. Residence in Réunion, Mayotte, another EU state or elsewhere does not change the nationality printed in a French passport, although the recent travel route can affect separate health checks.

Visa on arrival is currently available to French nationals, but availability is not the same as convenience. Completing the application before departure can remove the need to organise files and payment after a long flight. It also creates time to replace a reflective passport scan or explain an itinerary that includes several camps and islands.

An Ordinary Visa is used for permitted short visits and may allow a stay of up to 90 days under the official guidance. The actual grant notice and border endorsement control the holder's permission. Tourism does not authorise employment, paid assignments or a long academic programme. A traveller should not choose the easiest-looking category when another purpose describes the journey more accurately.

France was Tanzania's third-largest long-haul source market in the 2025 official visitor survey and the second-largest source market for Zanzibar. Many French itineraries therefore begin with a Zanzibar resort and add Selous/Nyerere, Serengeti or the northern circuit, while others reverse the order. The visa rule is the same: both destinations are within the United Republic.

The first destination field should follow the international arrival. A Paris–Doha–Zanzibar ticket points to Zanzibar, while Paris–Amsterdam–Kilimanjaro points to the mainland even when the longest stay will be on the beach. Entering the wrong first destination can make the application, flight and accommodation appear inconsistent. Use the first hotel or tour contact that can realistically explain the opening part of the journey.

A side trip outside Tanzania requires separate attention. A traveller crossing into Kenya and later returning should verify the entry conditions of both countries and the re-entry permission shown on the Tanzania visa. The East African Tourist Visa of other states is not a substitute for Tanzania's visa.

French passports may show several given names, compound surnames, birth names or characters that an online form represents differently. The application should remain recognisably identical to the passport. When the form does not accept an accent, the machine-readable zone provides the transliterated spelling used for international document reading. Do not delete a second given name merely because it is absent from a hotel booking.

Copy the active passport number and dates directly from the document. A carte nationale d'identité is not the passport requested for this international visa record. If the traveller holds a second nationality, the application must correspond to the passport that will be presented throughout the trip. Mixing one passport's nationality with another passport's number creates a fundamental inconsistency.

Photograph the biodata page in even light and show all edges, the portrait and machine-readable lines. Avoid fingers, curved pages and reflections across the number or expiry date. Upload a recent portrait as a separate file. The small image embedded in the passport has already been processed and is not a suitable substitute.

A traveller residing in metropolitan France may connect through Europe or the Gulf, while someone departing Réunion or Mayotte may travel through Mauritius, Kenya, Ethiopia or another regional hub. The Tanzania visa question remains tied to the French passport. Yellow-fever and transit questions, however, can depend on where the person has recently been and whether a connection requires entry into another state.

Review each flight segment rather than writing "France" as the travel origin when the trip starts elsewhere. Separate tickets may force baggage collection and immigration during a connection. A visa for Tanzania cannot authorise that transit-country entry. The airline and the relevant government are the correct sources for the connection rule.

If vaccination evidence is required for the route, keep the original certificate with the passport. Health rules are independent of the eVisa and should be checked again if the flight is rerouted. The application itinerary should also use the true departure and arrival information rather than a simplified package description.

A safari may change lodge every night, and listing every reception number can create more opportunity for errors than clarity. Start with the first reachable property or registered tour operator and keep a concise confirmation showing the principal route. The dates should not place the traveller in Zanzibar and Serengeti simultaneously or show departure before the final accommodation night.

When a French travel agency issued a voucher, check that the passenger name is visible and that the local operator can be identified. If the lead traveller alone appears on a group booking, obtain a passenger list or supporting confirmation for companions where possible. Each passport holder submits a separate application even when the tour evidence is shared.

A host invitation is not a routine requirement for an ordinary hotel-based French tourism trip. Use real accommodation evidence rather than seeking an unnecessary letter. For a private family or friend visit, provide the host details accurately and be ready to explain the relationship if requested.

A ten-day instruction should not be read as a ten-day guarantee. Review can take longer, particularly when the applicant must replace an attachment or clarify a mismatch. Government offices, weekends and peak travel periods do not follow the customer's flight deadline. Applying after the itinerary is stable but well before departure is the balanced approach.

Save the application identification number immediately. Status can be tracked online, and notifications may also reach the email used in the form. Check unwanted-mail folders, but verify progress through the tracker instead of waiting passively for an email. If evidence is requested, respond with a file that solves the stated issue.

Read the grant notice on receipt and compare it with the physical passport. If a name or passport number appears wrong, seek official guidance before departure. Store both a digital copy and an offline or printed backup with the return ticket and first accommodation.

The eVisa authorises travel and presentation for entry clearance; it does not remove the immigration officer's assessment. A clear explanation should match the file: where the traveller lands, where the first nights are spent, whether a safari operator is collecting the party and when the traveller leaves Tanzania.

Save key documents outside an email-only workflow. Airport internet and roaming can fail, and a booking accessible only inside a French agency application may be difficult to display. A small offline folder with French originals and, where helpful, a simple English itinerary makes the arrival conversation easier.

Changes are not automatically suspicious, but hiding them is unhelpful. Carry revised flights or hotel confirmations and explain material itinerary changes honestly. Border officers decide admission under Tanzanian law even when the online visa has been approved.
