Tanzania Visa for UK Citizens: British Passport Application

The Commonwealth wording causes avoidable confusion for UK travellers. Tanzania states that many Commonwealth nationals are exempt, but specifically names the United Kingdom among the exceptions. A British passport holder should therefore not assume visa-free entry based on Commonwealth membership. For a safari, Zanzibar holiday, Kilimanjaro trek or private leisure visit, the usual route is the Ordinary Visa.

The United Kingdom is listed among nationalities able to obtain a visa online or on arrival. Tanzania Immigration recommends the online platform. Completing the process before a long-haul journey makes the status clear before check-in and creates time to correct a passport scan, photograph or date conflict without standing in an arrival queue.

Ordinary Visa guidance allows a validity of up to 90 days, but the issued grant notice and border endorsement control the actual stay. Tourism permission does not cover Tanzanian employment or an activity requiring a Business, Student or other visa. The category must reflect what the traveller will genuinely do.

"British passport" can describe more than one nationality status. The biodata page may state British Citizen, British National (Overseas), British Overseas Territories Citizen or another status. A generic country dropdown may not explain those distinctions. Before using this page, verify the nationality wording in the actual document that will be presented for travel.

A traveller with dual nationality should keep one passport route consistent from application through entry. Entering UK nationality with another country's passport number, or buying flights against one document while applying with another, creates preventable confusion. If the chosen passport will expire or be renewed, stabilise the document before applying where possible.

Emergency travel documents and refugee or stateless documentation may be subject to different treatment. Tanzania's referral guidance says stateless persons and refugees using relevant convention documents cannot rely on visa on arrival and must obtain prior permission. Do not extend the standard British-citizen answer to a different travel document.

A popular UK trip combines a flight into Kilimanjaro, several northern-circuit parks and a beach stay in Zanzibar. Others use a package flight directly to Zanzibar before a short safari from Dar es Salaam. These movements remain inside the United Republic for visa purposes, so one valid visa covers them.

The form should follow the actual international arrival. Select Zanzibar when the first Tanzanian landing is Zanzibar, or the mainland when immigration is first cleared at Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro. The first hotel, lodge or operator should support that sequence. Avoid copying a tour brochure that lists Zanzibar first when the ticket shows a mainland arrival.

Regional extensions are different. If the holiday crosses into Kenya and returns, review the conditions on the Tanzania visa and the other country's entry permission. A tour marketed in Britain as "East Africa" does not create one universal visa, and Tanzania is not covered by the East African Tourist Visa used by certain neighbours.

British travellers commonly omit a middle name from bookings, but the visa record should follow the passport identity. Enter the surname and given-name fields in their printed order and inspect the machine-readable zone as a final check. Titles such as Mr or Dr are not part of the passport name unless the form specifically requests a title.

UK passports renewed online may arrive with a different number. An approval linked to the previous number should not be assumed to transfer. Apply using the document that will be carried. Confirm more than six months of validity from the relevant travel point and make sure an unused visa page remains available.

The scan should show the complete biodata page, not a cropped screenshot from the passport application. Avoid glare over the number or date fields and keep the MRZ readable. The portrait attachment is separate and should be a recent passport-style photograph, not the small printed passport portrait.

A UK family booking can contain several surnames, stepchildren or adults and minors on separate ticket references. Create a document folder per passport before starting. Label the biodata scan and portrait with the traveller's name so a parent's file is not accidentally attached to a child's record.

When one parent travels with a minor, check airline and transit rules for consent or relationship evidence. These are not automatically universal tourist-visa uploads, yet they may be important to the carrier or border officer. Carry a birth certificate or consent document when the circumstances make it relevant and ensure names link clearly to the passports.

Group tours should obtain a passenger list when the main voucher shows only the booking lead. Shared safari and hotel confirmations are useful, but each applicant must be visibly connected to the trip. Track every application separately because decisions or correction requests may arrive at different times.

The ten-day statement is planning advice, not a guaranteed service-level agreement. Government review may require a replacement image or clarification, and a customer's flight date cannot force approval. Apply once the passport and main itinerary are final, leaving enough time for a correction cycle.

Store the application ID immediately and track status online. Email messages can land in junk folders or fail when the address was typed incorrectly. The tracker is therefore more reliable than waiting for a notification. If additional information is requested, submit evidence that directly resolves the question.

After approval, compare the grant notice with the passport and carry an offline copy. Significant passport or itinerary changes should be raised with the competent authority before travel. Do not edit a PDF grant notice or assume a carrier will overlook a mismatch.

A traveller comfortable applying alone may use the official Tanzania Immigration website. A customer choosing our route should see the total before payment and understand the value being purchased. Check the passport nationality, purpose, arrival point and attachments before checkout because payment does not repair a false or unsuitable category.

Keep the receipt with the application ID. Be cautious about unexpected payment requests from unofficial messages. If Tanzania Immigration requests further evidence through the application process, verify the request and answer it accurately rather than paying an unknown third party to "release" a decision.

A visa is authorisation to travel and seek entry clearance. The immigration officer still decides admission and may ask where the visitor is staying, when the return flight departs and what the trip involves. The answer should match the application and be easy to support.

Save documents offline because airport Wi-Fi and UK mobile roaming may not work at the desk. A single folder with the grant notice, ticket, first address and tour contact is more useful than searching through months of email. Carry the relevant yellow-fever evidence when the recent route makes it necessary.

If plans changed after submission, present the revised evidence honestly. A hotel change is easier to understand than an invented answer. The visitor must continue to observe the purpose and stay conditions of the visa after entry.
