Tanzania Visa for Italian Citizens: Zanzibar and Safari Application

For an Italian citizen, the first useful question is the purpose of the journey. A holiday in Zanzibar, a northern-circuit safari, a Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary or a combined beach-and-wildlife trip normally belongs to the Ordinary Visa route. The category is designed for tourism and other permitted short visits; it does not authorise paid employment or an open-ended stay.

The online application is recommended by Tanzania Immigration even though Italians are listed as eligible for a visa on arrival. Applying online moves the form, document upload and payment stage ahead of the journey. This is especially helpful for a direct Zanzibar charter or a connection arriving during a busy holiday period, when solving an unclear photograph or passport mismatch at the destination is less comfortable.

The Ordinary Visa may be valid for a stay of up to 90 days, but the issued document and border decision control the actual permission. A traveller should not select tourism if the real plan is employment, volunteering, a long course or commercial activity that belongs to another category. The itinerary and attachments should support the purpose selected in the form.

Italy is Tanzania's second-largest long-haul source market in the 2025 official survey and the leading source market for Zanzibar. That travel pattern creates a specific search problem: many holiday packages are sold primarily as "Zanzibar," making travellers wonder whether island entry follows a separate visa regime. Tanzania Immigration is clear that the visa covers both parts of the United Republic.

The application should still reflect the actual route. A passenger landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport should choose Zanzibar as the first destination and enter the first hotel or resort accurately. Someone landing in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro before taking a domestic connection should identify the mainland arrival. When approval arrives, read it rather than filing it unread. Compare the passport number and identity fields, confirm the permission is appropriate for the planned trip and save an offline copy. If the airline changes a flight but the core travel dates remain within the permission, retain the revised ticket. If changes affect the issued visa details materially, obtain guidance rather than making assumptions.

A direct comparison between "Italian citizens" and "yellow fever required" is too simplistic. Many Italy–Tanzania journeys connect through European or Gulf airports and may not create the same health-document question as an itinerary that includes a stay in a risk country. A safari combined with Kenya, Uganda or another destination needs a route-specific review.
