Tanzania Visa for Italian Citizens: Zanzibar and Safari Application

For an Italian citizen, the first useful question is the purpose of the journey. A holiday in Zanzibar, a northern-circuit safari, a Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary or a combined beach-and-wildlife trip normally belongs to the Ordinary Visa route. The category is designed for tourism and other permitted short visits; it does not authorise paid employment or an open-ended stay.

The online application is recommended by Tanzania Immigration even though Italians are listed as eligible for a visa on arrival. Applying online moves the form, document upload and payment stage ahead of the journey. This is especially helpful for a direct Zanzibar charter or a connection arriving during a busy holiday period, when solving an unclear photograph or passport mismatch at the destination is less comfortable.

The Ordinary Visa may be valid for a stay of up to 90 days, but the issued document and border decision control the actual permission. A traveller should not select tourism if the real plan is employment, volunteering, a long course or commercial activity that belongs to another category. The itinerary and attachments should support the purpose selected in the form.

Italy is Tanzania's second-largest long-haul source market in the 2025 official survey and the leading source market for Zanzibar. That travel pattern creates a specific search problem: many holiday packages are sold primarily as "Zanzibar," making travellers wonder whether island entry follows a separate visa regime. Tanzania Immigration is clear that the visa covers both parts of the United Republic.

The application should still reflect the actual route. A passenger landing at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport should choose Zanzibar as the first destination and enter the first hotel or resort accurately. Someone landing in Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro before taking a domestic connection should identify the mainland arrival. A package-tour voucher can help explain the complete sequence, but the form should not contradict the international ticket.

Moving from Zanzibar to Arusha, Serengeti or another mainland destination is not a new international entry. Leaving Tanzania for Kenya or another country and returning is different; the traveller must check whether the issued permission supports re-entry. Do not confuse a regional tour sold by one operator with a single regional visa. Tanzania remains outside the East African Tourist Visa arrangement used by certain neighbouring states.

Italian identity documents can display more than one given name, and everyday airline or hotel records sometimes use only the first. The visa record should follow the passport, not the codice fiscale, carta d'identità or a shortened social name. Copy accents and spacing as the application system permits, while keeping the underlying sequence of surnames and given names unchanged.

The passport number must come from the document that will be carried to Tanzania. Do not use the identity-card number and do not copy a previous passport retained in a travel-app profile. Compare the typed number, date of issue, date of expiry and issuing country against the machine-readable zone. If a new passport is expected before the holiday, obtain it before applying where practical.

For the upload, lay the passport flat and avoid the reflection created by laminated security features. Every corner and the two machine-readable lines should be visible. The portrait upload is a different file: use a recent, front-facing passport-style photograph with an even background. A screenshot of a social profile or a crop from the passport page creates unnecessary quality risk.

Italian Zanzibar holidays are often purchased through tour operators, charter packages or agencies. The traveller may receive one confirmation containing the flight, transfer and resort rather than separate reservations. That is not automatically a problem. The key is whether the document identifies the passenger, destination and travel dates and agrees with what is entered in the application.

If the voucher uses an agency booking code without the hotel address, add the property name and location in the relevant form field. If the package includes a safari extension, identify the main lodge, camp or operator that can explain the mainland portion. Do not invent an address to fill space. A short accurate record is safer than a detailed itinerary assembled from guesses.

Travellers sharing one booking should make sure each applicant can be connected to it. The lead passenger's name alone may leave a spouse or child unsupported, so obtain a passenger list or additional confirmation when possible. Every person still submits an individual visa application. Organise each passport and photograph separately even when the return ticket and hotel voucher are common.

A fixed package departure is difficult to move, which makes a last-minute visa strategy unnecessarily fragile. Government review times are not guaranteed, and a request for a clearer image or corrected date resets the traveller's practical timetable. Start once the passport and core itinerary are stable rather than waiting for online check-in to open.

After submission, preserve the application identification number and monitor status through the official tracking facility. Email is useful, but spam filtering and mistyped addresses can prevent a message from being noticed. The applicant should therefore check the portal record directly and respond promptly if replacement evidence is requested.

When approval arrives, read it rather than filing it unread. Compare the passport number and identity fields, confirm the permission is appropriate for the planned trip and save an offline copy. If the airline changes a flight but the core travel dates remain within the permission, retain the revised ticket. If changes affect the issued visa details materially, obtain guidance rather than making assumptions.
