Tanzania eVisa Requirements: Complete Document Checklist

Tanzania Visa Guide Article Details

A practical, source-checked Tanzania eVisa document checklist for tourists, families, Zanzibar trips and category-specific applications.
Quick answer: Most Tanzania tourist eVisa applicants should prepare a passport biodata page, a separate recent passport photograph, a return or onward ticket, a first accommodation or tour-operator reference, and travel details that agree with one another. The passport should normally remain valid for at least six months and contain at least one unused visa page. Every passport holder, including a child, needs an individual application. The correct visa category still depends on nationality and purpose.

A Tanzania eVisa application becomes much easier when the documents are prepared before the form is opened. The difficult part is rarely uploading a file. The difficult part is making sure the passport, portrait, ticket, accommodation and travel purpose describe the same person and the same journey. A perfectly sharp passport scan will not repair a wrong visa category, an expired passport or dates that contradict the return booking.

This 2026 checklist is designed for travellers who are close to applying and want to avoid preventable corrections. It covers ordinary tourism, United States passport holders who normally use the Multiple Entry Visa route, short business assignments and genuine transit. It also explains what our assisted application service checks. evis.tz is an independent service, not a Tanzania government website. Tanzania Immigration Services alone decides whether a visa is issued and whether a traveller is admitted at the border.

What documents are required for a Tanzania eVisa?

For an Ordinary Visa used for tourism, the official Tanzania eVisa guidance identifies the valid passport biodata page, return ticket, completed online application and declaration, and payment of the relevant government fee. The online process also requires a photograph. Additional evidence can be requested because requirements depend on the applicant, nationality, visa category and facts of the trip.

In practical terms, a tourism applicant should have five items ready: identity evidence, a compliant portrait, proof of departure, a credible first stay or operator, and a simple itinerary. The first three are core application evidence. The accommodation and itinerary information make the form easier to complete accurately and may help answer follow-up questions. Do not upload unrelated documents merely to make the file look larger. A small, coherent application is usually easier to review than a folder of conflicting reservations.

ItemWhat to prepareCommon problem
PassportClear colour image of the biodata pageGlare, cropped number, insufficient validity
PortraitRecent colour JPG/JPEG with plain backgroundSelfie angle, shadows, unsuitable file size
TicketReturn or onward booking showing traveller and datesOnly the lead passenger appears
First stayHotel, lodge, host or principal operator referenceAddress and arrival city do not match

Passport requirements before you apply

The official online visa terms state that applicants should possess a passport with at least six months of validity and no fewer than one unused visa page before submission. Treat this as a pre-application gate. Count validity from the planned arrival date, not simply from the day the form is completed. If the passport will be renewed, it is generally cleaner to renew first and apply with the document that will actually be carried.

Scan or photograph the entire biodata page in colour. The machine-readable zone at the bottom, passport number, nationality, names, date of birth, issue date and expiry date should all be readable. Avoid a flash reflection over the photograph or number. Do not cover the page with a finger, and do not submit a black-and-white photocopy when a clear colour image is available.

How should names be entered?

Use the identity printed in the passport. Do not replace the passport spelling with the everyday spelling used on a hotel account or social profile. Travellers with accents, umlauts, multiple surnames, patronymics or different domestic and Latin scripts should compare the visual passport fields with the machine-readable zone. The international spelling in the passport is the safest operational reference when a web field cannot accept a special character.

Marriage, recent name changes and dual nationality require extra care. Apply with the passport that will be used for travel. If an airline booking was created under a different surname, correct the booking rather than forcing the visa application to copy the wrong record. A dual national should choose the nationality of the passport being presented for the trip.

Does a child need a separate passport and application?

Yes. Tanzania’s official guidance states that every passport holder requires an individual visa application, including minors. A shared family booking does not create a shared visa. Prepare a separate passport page and portrait for each child, and label every file clearly. When only the booking lead appears on a reservation, obtain a passenger list or confirmation that identifies the child.

Visa evidence is separate from airline consent rules or documents relevant when a child travels with one parent or another adult. Review carrier and transit-country requirements independently. Do not assume that a visa replaces birth, consent or custody evidence where those are legitimately requested.

Tanzania eVisa photo requirements explained

The official guideline requires a coloured photograph with a plain background, a front-facing full face, open eyes and a natural expression. Distracting shadows or background images should not appear. Head coverings are generally not permitted except for religious reasons, and the facial features must remain clearly visible. The published specification says the photograph should not exceed 45 mm by 35 mm, the uploaded image should not exceed 500 KB, and the accepted format is JPG or JPEG.

A passport photograph is not the same file as the photograph printed on the passport page. Upload a separate recent portrait. A cropped holiday photograph, car selfie, group picture or image with a beauty filter introduces unnecessary risk. Stand against an even light background, face the camera directly and keep the head centred. Check the final file after compression because aggressive compression can create a blurred face.

For a phone setup, file-size workflow and mistake-by-mistake visual check, use the dedicated Tanzania eVisa photo requirements guide before uploading the portrait.

Can glasses be worn?

The official guidance says an applicant who regularly wears eyeglasses may take the photograph with them. Even so, the eyes should remain visible and the lenses should not create glare. If reflection hides the eyes, retake the image. Sunglasses are not suitable. The objective is reliable identification, not simply satisfying a file upload.

What counts as a return or onward ticket?

A return ticket shows that the traveller plans to leave Tanzania after the visit. It should normally display the passenger name, route and travel dates. An onward ticket can serve a similar purpose when the traveller continues to another country instead of returning directly home. The departure date should fit the requested stay and the visa category.

Inspect the actual passenger information. Package bookings sometimes show only the person who made the reservation. If several family members apply, obtain a passenger manifest or airline confirmation listing everyone. Do not edit a PDF to insert names. A genuine carrier or agency record is more credible and easier to verify.

Referral-category applicants have different planning considerations. Official guidance advises them to apply at least two months before travel and not purchase flights or accommodation until approval; an itinerary may be used in place of a purchased flight ticket in that route. This is why nationality must be checked before a non-refundable booking is treated as a universal requirement.

How much accommodation information is enough?

For a straightforward tourist application, the first confirmed hotel, safari lodge, Zanzibar resort, host or principal tour operator usually provides the most useful anchor. Record the genuine name and location rather than inventing a complete address from memory. If the journey has many safari camps, the form does not need to become a diary. Keep the chronological itinerary available, but use the first stay and main operator to make the route understandable.

A traveller landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport and staying first in Moshi should not enter a Zanzibar resort as though it were the first arrival accommodation. Someone flying directly to Zanzibar should not select a mainland hotel merely because it was booked earlier. The first destination matters because Tanzania’s guidance asks travellers visiting both the mainland and Zanzibar to select the place they will visit first.

What if I am staying with a friend or relative?

Use the real host’s name, location and reachable contact information. A short host letter may be useful when it clarifies who is receiving the visitor and where the first stay occurs, although it is not a universal tourism upload for every ordinary application. Do not create a fictional hotel booking to make a private visit look like a package holiday.

Choose the correct Tanzania visa category

Documents cannot compensate for the wrong category. Most non-US tourists who require a visa use the Ordinary Visa. United States passport holders travelling for tourism are directed by official guidance to use the Multiple Entry Visa, even for a single planned trip. Short professional assignments can fall under Business Visa rules, while Transit Visa is reserved for genuine passage through Tanzania to another country and is not a low-cost tourism substitute.

RouteTypical purposeKey evidence
Ordinary VisaTourism, holiday, visiting friends or relativesPassport, portrait, return ticket, trip details
Multiple Entry VisaUS tourism or approved frequent-entry circumstancesPassport, portrait, return ticket; route-specific support
Business VisaShort lawful professional assignmentPassport, return ticket, assignment or contract evidence
Transit VisaPassing through Tanzania to another countryOnward ticket and destination-country evidence where required

Ordinary Visa does not authorize employment or conducting business. Business Visa is not a replacement for a work or residence permit, and official guidance limits it to qualifying short assignments not exceeding 90 days. When the purpose is unclear, resolve it before payment. A category selected only because it appears cheaper can cause rejection and waste both the government fee and travel time.

A document-by-document quality check

Passport file

  • The entire biodata page is visible.
  • All text and the machine-readable zone are sharp.
  • The document will meet the six-month validity expectation at arrival.
  • At least one unused visa page remains.
  • The passport is the one that will be carried.

Portrait file

  • Recent, colour and front-facing.
  • Plain background without shadows.
  • Eyes open and expression natural.
  • JPG or JPEG and within the published upload limit.
  • Not copied from the passport biodata page.

Travel file

  • Passenger name matches the passport.
  • Arrival precedes departure.
  • The stay fits the intended visa route.
  • Mainland and Zanzibar stages form one chronology.
  • Old quotations and cancelled bookings are removed.

What information should match across the application?

Consistency is one of the strongest practical quality signals. The passport identity should match the ticket. The ticket dates should match the requested arrival and departure. The first accommodation should match the first destination. The stated purpose should match the supporting evidence. The contact email should be active because the eVisa system communicates status and decisions electronically.

Minor itinerary changes can happen after submission, but do not deliberately submit a route known to be obsolete. Official guidance notes that submitted applications cannot simply be edited afterward and directs applicants with mismatches or flight changes affecting arrival or departure to seek guidance from the relevant immigration authority. Build a correction buffer into the timeline instead of applying hours before departure.

Common reasons an otherwise eligible application becomes difficult

  1. Wrong visa type: tourism, professional work and transit are treated as interchangeable.
  2. Unusable passport image: glare or cropping hides identity information.
  3. Invalid portrait: the passport-page photograph or a casual selfie is uploaded.
  4. Contradictory dates: departure appears before a safari or Zanzibar stay finishes.
  5. Booking-lead problem: a family member is absent from the ticket or hotel record.
  6. Passport renewal: the traveller applies with a passport that will not be carried.
  7. Late submission: there is no time to answer a document request.
  8. Duplicate application: a browser or payment delay is mistaken for a missing case.

None of these points predicts the government’s decision, but they are controllable. A document review should focus on these preventable issues instead of promising approval. Tanzania Immigration can request additional evidence or an interview, and possession of a visa does not remove the immigration officer’s authority at the entry point.

Do you need a yellow fever certificate for the visa upload?

Yellow fever evidence is an entry-health issue that depends on the actual route, not a universal visa upload for every traveller. Tanzania’s Ministry of Health guidance requires vaccination evidence for travellers arriving from yellow-fever-risk countries and for travellers whose transit in such a country lasts 12 hours or more. The published guidance says vaccination should be administered at least ten days before entry.

Check the complete routing, including long connections. A traveller departing from a country without yellow fever risk can still create a certificate issue through an extended transit in a listed country. Medical and age exemptions have their own conditions. Health requirements can change independently of visa rules, so verify them close to travel through official health and airline sources.

When should you submit the application?

Tanzania’s official portal does not give every ordinary applicant a guaranteed approval deadline. Apply when the passport and main route are stable, but early enough to answer a correction request. For a high-value safari, honeymoon, family group or fixed charter, several weeks of margin is more sensible than relying on a last-minute outcome. Referral-category applicants are specifically advised to allow at least two months.

Do not confuse an internal document check with a government processing guarantee. Our service can review whether files are readable and whether obvious details agree, but it cannot accelerate or control Tanzania Immigration’s decision. Airline, hotel and safari cancellation terms also remain separate from the visa process.

How the evis.tz assisted application works

The assisted route is intended for travellers who want a shorter form, clearer upload prompts and a consistency check before processing. You select nationality and purpose, enter travel and passport details, upload the passport, portrait and supporting travel evidence, and review the summary before payment. The total price is displayed before payment and includes the government visa fee plus the evis.tz assistance fee.

For an Ordinary Visa, the current evis.tz assisted total is $99: the published government fee is $50 and the service portion is $49. Different categories have different totals. The service does not guarantee approval and does not replace the official portal. Applicants who prefer to apply without assistance can use Tanzania Immigration’s official eVisa website directly.
