Quick Answer

Yes. A United States passport holder travelling to Tanzania for tourism must apply for a Multiple Visa, not an Ordinary Visa, even when the itinerary contains only one planned arrival. The visa covers both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Our total assisted-service price for this route is $189; Tanzania Immigration currently lists a USD 100 government Multiple Visa fee. Approval and admission remain government decisions.

Do United States Citizens Need a Visa for Tanzania?

US citizens are not visa-exempt for Tanzania. More importantly, Tanzania Immigration applies a specific tourist category to American passport holders: tourism and holiday travellers use a Multiple Visa. The choice is determined by nationality and purpose, so a one-entry safari does not make the Ordinary Visa the correct selection.

The visa allows the holder to travel and request entry. It does not guarantee admission and does not permit local employment. Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar are covered by the same valid Tanzania visa.

Application and arrival timeline

1

Confirm passport and purpose

Use the nationality shown in the passport and select tourism only when the trip is genuinely a holiday, safari, beach stay or private visit without employment.

2

Prepare clean digital evidence

Scan the full biodata page, create a separate portrait file and keep the itinerary, first accommodation and return journey together.

3

Complete one consistent application

Names, passport number, dates, arrival point and contact information should describe the same trip across every field and attachment.

4

Review before payment

Correct transcription errors before submission. Tanzania Immigration warns that a submitted application cannot simply be edited afterwards.

5

Track the decision

Keep the application identification number and monitor both the tracking page and email inbox until the grant notice is available.

6

Travel with supporting evidence

Carry the passport used in the application, visa grant notice, return ticket and the accommodation or tour details used to explain the visit.

Important Answers for United States Applicants

Why US tourists need a Multiple Visa instead of an Ordinary Visa

United States passport holders travelling to Tanzania for tourism must use the Multiple Visa route. This is a nationality-specific rule, not an optional upgrade selected because the traveller expects to enter more than once.

The most important decision for an American applicant happens before the form begins. Tanzania Immigration states that tourists holding a United States passport must apply for a Multiple Visa. Choosing an Ordinary Visa because the holiday contains only one arrival can therefore place the application in the wrong category. The rule follows the passport, not the number of flights, the traveller's state of residence or whether the itinerary is limited to Zanzibar.

A Multiple Visa may remain valid for up to one year, but that does not mean an uninterrupted one-year stay. The permitted period on each visit and every condition printed on the grant notice still control the trip. A traveller should plan around the issued permission rather than treating validity as a promise of continuous residence. Paid work, local employment and a long-term course also require a different immigration basis.

This page therefore quotes a $189 total service price for the US tourist route. That is our service price, not the government fee alone. The official government schedule currently lists the Multiple Visa fee as USD 100. The difference must remain visible so an applicant understands what is being purchased: application assistance and document review do not purchase approval, and Tanzania Immigration retains the decision.

  • Select Multiple Visa for a US passport holder taking a tourism or holiday trip.
  • Do not switch to Ordinary Visa merely because the itinerary has one entry.
  • Read the issued grant notice for the actual stay and entry conditions.
  • Use a business or other correct category when tourism does not describe the real purpose.

How should an American name and passport number be entered?

Copy the identity fields from the US passport biodata page exactly. Middle names, suffixes and passport-number characters should not be shortened to match an airline profile or everyday name.

American travellers frequently use a shortened name for hotel bookings, loyalty accounts and domestic travel. A visa application is different. The surname and given names should follow the machine-readable passport, including a middle name when it appears as part of the given-name field. A suffix such as Jr or III should be handled according to the passport presentation rather than inserted into a random field. The safest comparison is application versus passport, not application versus airline account.

US passport numbers contain nine characters in the current format, but applicants should never rely on memory or an old passport saved in a browser. Read the active physical passport and compare every character with the machine-readable zone. Confusing zero with the letter O, or one with I, creates a serious mismatch because the visa is linked to the submitted document. If the passport will be renewed before travel, applying against the expiring document can create another avoidable problem.

The upload should show the entire information page with all four edges, portrait, dates and machine-readable lines visible. Glare from a phone flash can hide security printing or a digit. A clear colour image taken square to the page is more useful than a heavily compressed scan. The separate passport photograph must be a recent portrait; extracting the tiny printed passport portrait produces poor quality and should be avoided.

  • Use the current passport, not information saved from a previous document.
  • Keep middle names consistent across the form, ticket and supporting evidence.
  • Check the expiry date against the intended arrival date and the six-month rule.
  • Upload the full biodata page and a separate recent portrait.
Does a safari plus Zanzibar itinerary require two Tanzania visas?

No. A valid Tanzania visa covers both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. An American applicant selects the first destination in the form and can then continue to the other part of the United Republic without purchasing a second Tanzania visa.

A common US itinerary begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport, continues through Tarangire, Ngorongoro or Serengeti, and ends with several nights in Zanzibar. Another begins in Zanzibar and later flies to Arusha. These are domestic movements within the United Republic of Tanzania for visa purposes. The application should identify the true first arrival point and present an itinerary that makes the sequence easy to understand.

Problems usually come from inconsistent evidence rather than the two-destination plan itself. For example, the form may say Zanzibar is first while the ticket lands at Kilimanjaro, or the hotel dates may overlap with a safari camp hundreds of kilometres away. A concise itinerary can solve this: list the arrival airport, first accommodation or tour operator, broad safari dates, Zanzibar dates and final departure. There is no need to upload a minute-by-minute schedule, but the main movements should be credible.

If the traveller leaves Tanzania for Kenya, Rwanda or another country and later returns, the re-entry should be considered against the Multiple Visa conditions and validity. The East African Tourist Visa used by some neighbouring states does not replace a Tanzania visa. Each country's permission remains separate, even when one tour company sells the entire regional trip as a single package.

Trip patternWhat to enter firstMain check
Kilimanjaro → safari → ZanzibarKilimanjaro/MainlandSafari and beach dates should join logically
Zanzibar → Arusha → safariZanzibarFirst hotel and arrival flight should match

What changes for US families and children travelling together?

Every passport holder, including a child listed on a parent's travel plans, requires a separate Tanzania visa application. A family itinerary can be shared, but identity files and application records must remain separate.

Parents often expect one family submission because flight and hotel reservations contain several names. Tanzania Immigration guidance instead requires an individual application for every passport holder, including minors. Each child therefore needs a passport biodata upload, portrait and its own application record. Shared return tickets, safari confirmations and accommodation may be reused when they clearly list the relevant family members.

The practical way to avoid mix-ups is to build a folder for each traveller before starting. Name files with the passport holder's name and document type, then check which email address will be monitored for each application. Copying an adult passport scan into a child's record or attaching the wrong portrait is easy when files have generic names such as image1.jpg. A deliberate file structure saves more time than rushing through several browser tabs.

When only one parent travels with a minor, the family should also check airline, transit-country and border requirements for parental consent or relationship evidence. These documents are not automatically listed as a universal Tanzania tourist-visa attachment, but a carrier or officer may need to understand the child's travel authority. Birth certificates and consent letters should be legible, and names should connect logically to the passports.

  • Create one application and document folder for each passport holder.
  • Check that shared bookings identify the accompanying child where possible.
  • Review transit rules as well as Tanzania entry rules for minors.
  • Carry relationship or consent evidence when the family situation makes it relevant.
Which transit and health checks matter on a US–Tanzania journey?

The visa rule is based on the US passport, while yellow-fever evidence can depend on the recent travel route. A connection is not always treated the same as a stay, so travellers should check current health guidance for every country on the itinerary.

Most journeys from the United States involve at least one international connection, commonly through Europe, the Gulf, Ethiopia or Kenya. The Tanzania visa does not grant permission to pass immigration in a transit country. A long connection, airport change or overnight stop may create separate transit-entry requirements, so the passenger should review the carrier and relevant government guidance before ticketing.

Yellow-fever documentation is route-sensitive. A person flying from the United States through a country with a yellow-fever transmission risk may face different questions from someone connecting in a location without that risk. The length and nature of the connection can matter. Because health rules can change, an applicant should not rely on a broad statement that all Americans either need or never need a certificate. Keep the vaccination certificate available when the current route makes it applicable.

The same route review helps with baggage and proof of onward travel. Separate tickets can require the passenger to collect luggage and enter the connection country, even when the traveller expected to remain airside. On arrival in Tanzania, immigration may ask for the return or onward ticket and evidence of funds for the stay. Store these documents offline because airport connectivity cannot be assumed.

When should a US citizen submit and how is the application tracked?

Apply with a deliberate buffer before departure. Tanzania's terms advise lodging an online application at least ten days before expected travel, but applicants should allow more time for corrections, holidays and complex itineraries.

An application date should be chosen by working backwards from departure, not by assuming that every file is approved within a marketing estimate. Official review can require additional information, and neither an intermediary nor an applicant can force a government decision date. A comfortable buffer protects the expensive parts of an American long-haul trip: international flights, safari deposits, internal flights and limited-room lodges.

After submission, keep the application identification number in more than one place. Tanzania Immigration allows applicants to track status through the portal and may send notifications to the email entered in the form. Check spam and promotions folders, but do not treat the absence of an email as proof that nothing changed. The tracking record is the better operational reference.

If a correction is requested, answer the actual issue rather than uploading the same unclear file. A passport image rejected for glare needs a new image; a hotel date that conflicts with the arrival needs an explanation or corrected booking. Once the grant notice is available, compare the name, passport number and travel permission immediately. Report a suspected mismatch through the appropriate channel before boarding rather than hoping it will be ignored at the airport.

What does the $189 US application price include?

The $189 amount displayed on evis.tz is the total price for our assisted US Multiple Visa application service. It is not presented as the Tanzania government fee alone and cannot guarantee approval.

Price clarity matters because US citizens are placed in a different tourist visa category from most nationalities. Tanzania Immigration currently publishes a USD 100 government fee for a Multiple Visa. Our $189 total service price combines the applicable route with assistance designed to help the traveller organise information, identify document-quality issues and submit a consistent record. The final government decision always remains outside our control.

A customer should compare services on the same basis. A headline that shows only a government levy is not equivalent to a total assisted-service price, while an assisted service is not the same as applying directly on the government portal. evis.tz is an independent service and must be described that way at every high-intent point. Applicants who prefer to apply without assistance can use the official Tanzania Immigration portal.

Payment should only follow a final review of the passport route and trip purpose. A tourist visa does not authorise local employment, and paying for the wrong category does not convert it into the correct permission. Read the summary, make sure United States is the passport nationality, check the total shown at checkout and retain the payment record with the application identification number.

Final pre-flight checklist for an American traveller

A grant notice is necessary but does not by itself guarantee admission. Carry the passport used in the application, visa evidence, return journey and enough trip information to answer an immigration officer clearly.

Before leaving home, compare the visa grant notice with the physical passport one final time. The name and passport number should match, and the passport should still satisfy the validity condition. Travellers who renewed after applying should not assume that approval attached to the old document automatically transfers. Ask Tanzania Immigration for guidance when document circumstances change.

Keep the first accommodation, safari operator contact, internal flight and return itinerary accessible without internet. A border officer can ask where the visitor will stay and how the traveller intends to leave. A concise answer supported by bookings is stronger than searching through hundreds of emails at the desk. Visitors should also be able to show evidence of sufficient funds if requested.

Finally, distinguish permission to travel from permission to enter. The eVisa allows the holder to travel and present the case for entry; an immigration officer makes the entry decision at the designated point. Honest, consistent answers and documents are therefore valuable through the entire journey, not only during the online form.
